Best known for delivering Sony's epic E3 2006 press conference and more recently turning the business from financial woe to profitable, Kaz Hirai has chosen today to step down as Sony's CEO.


In a move that has shocked Sony fanboys and shareholders alike, Kaz Hirai has moved to a position of chairman, leaving Kenichiro Yoshida with the responsibility of carrying things forward for the company.

Kaz Hirai took over Sony in 2012 following a rough generation of negative stock momentum and loss of market share. During his reign as god emperor of the company, it has achieved record sales with the PS4, returning PlayStation to its former glory.




PlayStation fans hold Kaz Hirai in high regard. One person even made a parody Twitter account a few years back, which said the following shortly after the announcement:



Sony will make this move official later today during a third-quarter earnings call, marking the end of an era.
