In case you’d made the mistake of forgetting that Johnny Cash was one of the greatest to ever do it, a recently resurfaced photo shoot has emerged to remind you of that crucial fact.

The photos show Cash posing by the water’s edge in thigh-high wading boots, doing his best Blue Steel impression before Blue Steel was even a thing. A search of the internet suggests these photos were taken in 1971 when Cash was 39.

At the time, Cash had just finished starring in The Johnny Cash Show, a musical variety show that ran from June 1969 to March 1971 for 58 episodes. Evidently, when he wasn’t filming, he spent his time serving cunt in impressively dramatic boots.

Cash was no stranger to serving, however, as he demonstrated a decade later when he switched wardrobes with Elton John when both appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1982. He looks fantastic in John’s extravagant coat and glasses, and a far cry from the serious country singer best known by many for “shooting a man in Reno just to watch him die.”

While most people accepted that Cash was wearing wading boots, perhaps to go fishing, others pointed out that the boots were heeled, and wondered if that was practical for wading boots. So perhaps they aren’t the most practical wading boots; someone as committed to looking good as Cash obviously was could be forgiven for opting for style over comfort.
