Aaron Judge Home run - blue jays fan

Aaron Judge has done it. In the top of the seventh inning with a man on first and nobody out, Judge took Toronto lefty reliever Tim Mayza’s 3-2 sinker and lined it over the left field wall for his American League single season record tying 61st home run. The long ball sets him equal with Yankee legend Roger Maris for the club record, as well as the all time mark for any player not later heavily linked to steroid use.

On the receiving end of the home run ball was a Toronto Blue Jays fan, who’s outstretched glove just tipped the ball before it bounced off the left field back wall and into the bullpen. The effort was a valiant one, but had he been able to secure that ball, it would have been worth millions.

History making home run balls have a track record of selling for seven figures, with Mark McGuire’s 70th home run in 1998 eventually going for $3 million. JP Cohen, the president of Memory Lane Auctions, has already announced that he’s willing to shell out $2 million for Judge’s next record breaking 62nd home run ball, but some are estimating that it could be worth up to $5 million, with this 61st in the $2 million range.

No matter the exact amount, it was clear that this fan knew the implications of his miss, and his reaction says it all. It may be a long time before he lives this one down.
