Atari VCS retro console.

Atari is back. While it hasn't made a console in over 25 years, that'll change soon when the Atari VCS hits store shelves.

So what exactly is this console, and is it even worth looking forward to? Well, today a bunch of new information was released about the console, and we're going to summarize everything.

Console

The console is being built to look exactly like the Atari 2600. Its internals will be much more powerful, though.

Controller

The controller will be a rubber joystick that's just like the classic Atari controllers, so expect to develop some carpal tunnel. There will be a modern controller option (seen below), although it could end up not being bundled with the console. With this, just about any game could theoretically work on the console even though its main focus is retro nostalgia.

Cost

The Atari VCS will cost between $249 to $299, which means that it will likely cost $299. This price puts it in the same realm as the Xbox One, Switch, and PS4.

Games

This is where the console will be a tough sell. Despite its price that'll be comparable to an Xbox One or PS4, the main focus will be on retro Atari games. Expect some of the best-selling Atari games to be re-released. However, the system will also have some "modern games". It's unclear at this time what exactly that means, but it's unlikely it will get multiplatform AAA titles like Assassin's Creed and Madden.

Technology

Even though you don't care, I'm going to tell you about this anyway. It will have a Linux operating system and a custom AMD CPU/GPU. Next.

Release Date

This system will release either later this year or early next year depending on when Atari finishes making the product.
