Cheat codes aren't exactly in vogue anymore, probably because publishers would rather make you buy $4.99 DLC, but that doesn't mean we can't be nostalgic about them.
Below are 15 of the craziest cheats of all-time.
1. Big Daddy - Age of Empires
Code: Type the code BIGDADDY during a game
Instead of waiting to evolve out of the Stone Age, why not spawn a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 for you to ride around in with a rocket launcher? In-fact, try spawning a whole bunch of them and then drive around blowing a bunch of stone throwing neanderthals into smithereens. Thank me later.
2. Big Head Mode - NBA Jam
Code: Hold Up, Turbo, and the Steal button before tipoff
There's something special about watching Larry Bird and Michael Jordan jump 20 feet in the air before smashing the ball into the hoop and setting the net aflame, especially when they have colossal-sized heads. This cheat code practically makes their melons half their total body weight, which should make it physically impossible to jump at all, but this is an arcade game we're talking about.
3. Bikini Samus - Metroid
Code: Hold Up, Turbo, and the Steal button until the tipoff
While Lara Croft usually gets all the attention, Samus snuck one by us in the late 80's. Most people were convinced she was a guy in a suit of sci-fi armor back then... little did they know.
4. Debug Mode - Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Code: Go to the Sound Test menu, play tracks 19, 65, 09, 17, and then return to the title screen and press A and Start. Then play tracks 01, 09, 09, 02, 01, 01, 02, 04.
This code basically turns you into a god, a god capable of going anywhere you want and altering the game in ways that usually only a developer is capable of.
5. Exploding Lara Croft - Tomb Raider
Code: Enter a code wrong
Unlike the other codes on this list, this code only works if you type in a code incorrectly. Your reward is famous adventure Lara Croft exploding into bits and pieces. If only we were rewarded like this for getting other things wrong in life.
6. Flying Car - Grand Theft Auto 3
Code: Square, Down, L2, Up, L1, Circle, Up, X, Left
For the man who just doesn't have time to be monkeying around in traffic every morning, the flying car code is expedient. Get a good luck at the world's blocky geometry from above while soaring like a beautiful Condor. Truly magnificent.
7. Hot Coffee - Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Code: Mod the game
Rockstar Games got in a lot of trouble for this one, probably because it was code included in the game that should have been enough to warrant an Adult Only rating. Mistake or not, it was many teenagers' first foray into the art of watching lewd virtual content. The pr0n industry has since grown by billions.
8. Infinite Bullet Time - Max Payne 3
Code: Gold every character in Arcade mode
If you've ever wanted to re-enact a scene from John Wick, here's your chance.
9. Konami Code - Metal Gear Solid 2
Code: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start
As cool as the Konami Code is, in most cases it's used to make games easier in a boring way. Not in Metal Gear Solid 2. In this case you got trolled by none other than Solid Snake himself.
10. Lose Your Head - Super Monaco GP
Code: Win a race then press A, B, C
It's fun enough running over the flagman with your car, let alone being able to see your race car driver stand at the podium holding his own severed head in his hands as if he was just killed by a Mortal Kombat fatality. Close your eyes, kids.
11. Memory Card Magic - Metal Gear Solid
Code: Move your memory card from slot 1 to slot 2
The original Metal Gear Solid Psycho Mantis battle is notable for a variety of reasons, one of which is that he can be beaten in multiple ways that are downright bizarre. For example, you can swap your memory card slot so he can no longer read your mind, allowing you to finally deliver a good punch to his gut. Hideo Kojima is such a funny guy.
12. Moon Physics - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Code: Pause the game and press X, Square, Left, Up, Down, Up, Square, Triangle
As much as people want to go to the Moon and Mars, skateboarding wouldn't be quite the same there. But if Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2's simulation is any indication, it would probably be better. I mean, you'd be able to ollie over your car with minimal effort for crying out loud.
13. Natural Disasters - SimCity 2000
Code: Type priscilla in-game to access the debug menu
I'm not sure which is more rewarding, building up a massive metropolis, or watching it all fall apart as a tornado and UFO simultaneously roar through the city.
14. Voice Changer - Nier: Automata
Code: Beat the game once then find the hidden setting under Other options
Nier: Automata might be about the world as we know it coming to an end, but that doesn't mean it it can't take a brief break for humor. This unlockable setting completely transforms the game into something that is sure to crack you up.
15. Weird Hats - Medal of Honor: Frontline
Code: Enter HABRDASHR on the Bonus screen
Who doesn't like hats? Seriously.
