If Euphoria – a series defined by multiple dick slideshows, graphic carousel orgasms, and of course, an entire animated rendition of a gay 1 Direction fan fiction – wasn’t enough to convince you that showrunner Sam Levinson is a horny bastard, the “human cumsock” plot line in his new series The Idol should most definitely do the trick.

Sam Levison? A Weirdo? Wow. Who – other than leading lady Lily-Rose Depp – could have possibly seen this coming?

On Monday, May 22, the already-controversial HBO series, one set to detail a pop star’s mental breakdown, return to fame, and involvement with a cult leader, made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Though The Idol’s air of “sleaze and torture porn,” as the Evening Standard’s Jo-Anne Titmarsh so aptly put it, may have been a turn-on to Levinson, critics were less-than-amused panning the work in a series of Guy Fieri-esque reviews.

“Nasty, brutish, [feels] much longer than it is, and way, way worse than you’d have anticipated,” wrote Rolling Stone’s David Fear of the pop star epic, one of the many critics behind the show’s 15% Rotten Tomatoes Rating.

“Even the music is dreadful,” quipped The Telegraph’s Robbie Collin.

So what – beyond its evidently horrible soundtrack – could make one of 2023’s most hyped series so absolutely terrible?

The Idol’s allegedly contentious production, featuring Levinson who turned the series into a “rape fantasy” and then overhauled the series after co-producer Able Tesfaye – a.k.a. The Weeknd – purportedly felt the show was leaning too much into “female perspective” (despite its female protagonist), were documented in Rolling Stone’s recent expose.

It is my pleasure to introduce you to “the human cumsock” plot.

Shortly after hitting the big screen, several critics took to Twitter to express their displeasure with the series as a whole, namely, an alleged storyline in which a photo depicting leading pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) with cum on her face. The photo begins making the rounds on social media, an affair resulting in several discussions of “bukakke” and our leading character landing the digital nickname of “the human cumsock.”

“How are 14-year-old girls going to buy tickets for this when she’s frosted like a Pop Tart?” Jocelyn’s LiveNation representative reportedly says at one point during the show.

Though audiences will have to wait until Sunday, June 4 to see the offending scene for themselves (I guess something had to succeed Succession), the mere mention of this plot left social media with several questions – namely, what the actual fuck?

“Everything I’ve learned about this show and the man that created it has been against my will,” wrote Twitter user @hollowcrowned.

Meanwhile, others used this scene to counter Levinson’s claims he didn’t go overboard with sexual content in the show.

“I feel like anything involving calling someone a human cumsock can't really be qualified as a revolutionary portrayal of female sexuality” quipped @hkwxrd.

Hey, at least if The Idol doesn’t work out for Levinson, there’s always PornHub.
