All good heroes need a good villain, and two of gaming's most iconic heroes, Mario and Luigi, find theirs in the form of their antitheses Wario and Waluigi. The pairs mirror each other in just about every way, from names to body types to personalities: Wario is "an anti-hero and the evil and greedy version of his arch-rival Mario," according to WarioWiki. But as similar as they are, the Nintendo brothers might mirror each other even more closely than previously thought.

Mario and Luigi are Italian plumbers and have long been rumored to be gay. Even the game’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, claimed that they were never supposed to be brothers. "The original intent of the game was a game full of signs of gay culture, Luigi and Mario were a gay couple trying to meet the challenges of a society that rejects them." So if Mario and Luigi are gay Italian plumbers, who are their counterparts? Straight Greek concreters.

In this TikTok, Jordan Raskopoulos offers proof for that theory. "Yes, Wario and Waluigi are Greek," she says. She goes on to show a clipping from an old Nintendo Power magazine that lists Wario's original name as Jimmy Poppadopolos. "He's Greek."

While this theory makes sense, some fans just have one small issue. "I can accept Waluigi being Greek," one person comments. "But straight?" Other fans agreed. "You got the sexualities flipped. Mario and Luigi are brothers. Wario and Waluigi are lovers."

While we seem to have nationalities and occupations all sorted out, sexuality might take some more time. Not that it matters; the Greeks and the Romans were pretty loose with all of that anyhow.
