Several money-hungry robbers took the term “hot on their trail” a little too literally during a recent heist, sending sparks flying — and onlookers gawking — after nearly lighting the road on fire in an ATM robbery gone wrong.
On Sunday, a group of thieves decided to hit a Bank of America branch in Oakland, California. Yet instead of simply taking the money and running, they opted for a heavier lift – literally — attaching the ATM to the back of their white van and gunning it down the highway.

Despite their apparent need for speed and dramatics, the metal machine drawing rows of sparks as it scraped across the road, it appears they were less covert than they had intended. Their scheme quickly went viral in a now-infamous clip, one that garnered a whole lot of critique from the armchair robbers at home.
“This wasn't well thought out,” wrote u/An_Old_IT_Guy in a r/PublicFreakout post recounting the robbery. “I mean just follow the gouges in the pavement to their hideout.”
“The most perfect ‘bruh,’” added u/ParkerWGB.
And these Redditors aren’t wrong. As of Monday, one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident, per local news outlet KTVU Fox 2.
We can only hope these thieves have some really good dye remover … and even better attorneys.
