Whether developers like it or not, reviews are a big part of the gaming industry, to a point where bonuses are awarded to development teams that achieve high review averages, and games are called garbage if they don't get at least a 90 Metascore.

Knowing this, some gamers like to protest games by bombing user review scores. As crazy as it is, when this happens it can make a difference in whether or not potential customers spend money on the game or not.

As challenging of problem as it is to deal with, Valve thinks it has a solution: review histograms.

Now available on Steam, a review histogram will allow users to see a chronological graph of total reviews for a product and whether they were positive or negative. Using this top-down view of review trends, Valve hopes to visualize average reception for a game and better highlight review abuse.

In addition, it will automatically detect when an ordinary number of negative reviews are left within a short period of time and present an option for excluding the reviews from being shown.

The new feature was introduced using an extremely long official blog post that nobody will read.
