1. Resident Evil 7 - Marguerite Boss Fight
Forget the Big Lady Vampire for a minute because Marguerite comes first and she’s coming for blood. She stalks you all game long before mutating into a human and dung pile crossbreed, that tries to eat your face off. A great experience, but one that still gives us the heebie-jeebies every time we play it.
2. Resident Evil - Zombie Dogs Through The Window
Jump scares are pretty common nowadays but back in the 90s when survival horror was fresh, they were terrifying. Zombified dogs jumping through a window and chasing you down until you escape or they kill you? Pulse pounding stuff.
3. Crimson Heads -Resident Evil Remake
A precursor to The Evil Within’s, body burning mechanic, in Resident Evil’s remake, killing a zombie wasn’t enough to put them down. You had to burn the body as well. And every time you do this, the zombies thrash and scream, a sound that is utterly terrifying.
4. First Zombie (Resident Evil)
Imagine being stuck in a supposedly empty mansion and having a zombie turn around for the first time, half its face covered in blood as it stands up and tries to eat your brains. Scared yet? So was everyone in the 90s.
5. Villagers Attack - Resident Evil 4
What’s worse than one virus-infected person attacking you? An entire village of people coming at you all at once, villagers with axes, knives, pitchforks, chainsaws, and torches all come chasing you down trying to end your life….and that’s just in the first hour of the game.
6. Resident Evil 2 - Licker Through The Window
Another window jump scare, but lickers are way scarier and way deadlier than zombie dogs, Lickers got introduced in Resident Evil 2 and they were a pain in the ass to take down because of ammo scarcity.
7. Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis Kills Brad
We all know people will die in horror, you just hope it won’t be you, or any of your friends. In this case it was when Nemesis completely obliterated Brad then started chasing you around. You can try to fight Nemesis but you’ll just end up burning ammo.
8. Resident Evil Zero - Humanoid Leechesre
Zero has never really gotten the love it deserves. The Leeches in Zero are absolutely terrifying because they’re genetically mutated humans. It’s easy enough to kill some random creature, but knowing you’re killing what used to be a human being sticks with you.
9. Jack Bursting Through Walls
You’ll be exploring the Baker mansion and thinking you’re safe until Jack decides to run through a wall with a shovel or reach through a wall, grab you by your head and beat you to death with his bare hands. Sound fun? It is!
10. Resident Evil 2 Playing as Sherry
The thing that makes Resident Evil so satisfying is the ability to defend yourself against the things that go bump in the night. Playing as Sherry is terrifying because you can’t defend yourself, all you can do is run,
11. Resident Evil 6 - Hiding from Ustanak
Some people call the Ustanak from Resident Evil 6 a knock-off of Mr. X but he’s pretty terrifying in his own right. Having to hide from him in the caves during Jake’s campaign when Ustanak is quite literally destroying everything around you and you’re praying he doesn’t pick your hiding spot next is pulse-pounding tension at its best.
12. Resident Evil Remake - Enter Lisa Trevor
Lisa is the daughter of the architect of the original Resident Evil Mansion’s creator and when you meet her for the first time she makes an impact with her grotesque form. You have to be careful when fighting her because one wrong move can lead to your life ending almost instantly.
13. Resident Evil 7 Jack Cutting Your Hand Off
Playing Resident Evil 7 is scary enough, but playing Resident Evil 7 in VR is an entirely new level of scary. And when you combine the two and watch Jack cut your hand in VR it’s absolutely horrifying. This opening to Resident Evil 7 lets you know the game isn’t playing nice.
