A Woman Designed a Chair That Stops "Manspreading" and It Has Become a New Meme

University of Brighton student Laia Laurel designed a custom chair that prevents men from spreading their legs, aka "manspreading," as part of an art piece titled, "A Solution for Man-spreading." The chair received the Belmond Award because her design is, "a bold, purpose-driven design that explores the important role of design in informing space, a person's behaviour and society issues of today."

Laurel, who will be graduating later this month, said of her design, "It came both from my own experiences of men infringing on my space in public, and also from 'The Everyday Sexism Project," which is a website in which women write about the sexism they experience in everyday life.

It has been featured in multiple news outlets and has quickly become the next big online controversy.
