Wrestling video games got almost three decades to improve, but have they stepped up? As far as fans are concerned, the games have not consistently improved, but there have been some hidden gems throughout the years. Let's take a look at some of the best wrestling games based on their Metacritic score.

1.
Score 90 - WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role - The best wrestling title ever released based on the score is the second SmackDown game made by THQ. But the score is pretty much in line with the fun this game brought to the table on the PlayStation. It was fast-paced, true to the spirit of wrestling, and had a great roaster to back it up. Moreover, it takes place in the best era in WWE, the attitude era. -
2.
Score 89 - WWF No Mercy - Now, it may be the second-best game based on Metacritic, but for me, this game is the best, especially in terms of how good it was for the time. This game is one of the most detailed pro wrestling games ever. One absurd example of this is that players can assign different taunts based on if they are in the ring, outside, on the side of the ring, on the ropes, on the turnbuckles, and under the turnbuckle. -
3.
Score 86 - UFC Undisputed 3 - Do not mistake the UFC Undisputed 3 as EA Sports UFC 3 because there's a day and night difference between the games. And while the new one may be the most accessible one to play right now, it's the 2012 title that has been the best one yet. Undisputed 3 did everything right for its time and was loved by fans for the innovative gameplay. Moreover, this one was also published by THQ, the guys who made the best-rated wrestling game out there. -
4.
Score 85 - UFC Undisputed 2010 - This game is a big example of Undisputed games that have continually improved through the times. It's one of the two highest-rated UFC games on this list, and it's for the mind-boggling innovation for the time. This game looked and played like the perfect martial arts and wrestling games of the time and was a few of the must-own games on PS3. -
5.
Score 85 - WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain - Here's easily one of the most played wrestling games when it comes to multiplayer. This game supported as many as six players on PS2 and was one of the fastest, fun, and most balanced wrestling games ever. The entire strategy behind giving players the option to defend strikes, grapples, and special moves separately almost create this real-time rock, paper, scissors kind of a situation where understanding and guessing your opponent's playstyle becomes part of the game. -
6.
Score 84 - Def Jam: Fight for NY - One of the biggest forgotten fighting/wrestling game of all time has to be Def Jam. It is clearly a big step up from the last game and features a packed roster full of many famous stars of that time. This game is fluid, fun, and a great example of a wrestling game mixed with fast-paced combat action that hasn't been recreated since. -
7.
Score 84 - WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2006 - This game was a brand new formula when THQ took the series in a new direction. This time it was more about making the game realistic rather than more arcade-like the SmackDown names. Another reason was that it has to be different because the name no longer represented one brand. This was SmackDown vs. Raw, and the 2006 version is probably the biggest leap of the series. -
8.
Score 82 - WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth - Before THQ perfected their SmackDown game's formula in Here Comes The Pain, they created Shut Your Mouth. The game's sheer energy and electrifying nature are well represented in its box art that features the people's champ, The Rock. This game featured many experimental features that were later carried over and polished in the next game. -
9.
Score 81 - WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 - During the early 2010s, this game was the biggest deal when it came out wrestling titles. This game marked the last wrestling game on DS and was one of the best on PSP. The console version was received very well, especially due to the pending much-needed improvements made to the game since 2007. The completely overhauled creation modes were a big reason this game was liked by players so much. -
10.
Score 81 - WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 - Easily one of the best career modes in WWE games, especially since it gives a close-up of life as a wrestling superstar. This game wasn't too different from the older one, but the revamped modes gave it a breath of fresh air. On top, the choice for music was top notch for the game giving players a nostalgia of a lifetime. -
11.
Score 81 - Def Jam Vendetta - This was the time in 2003 when EA didn't have the reputation it has today. Back then, hearing the words EA sports during the intro meant you're in for a treat. That's exactly how players felt before playing this one, and it didn't disappoint. While the sequel did improve on this one, it was still a solid foundation for a great wrestling/fighting game. -
12.
Score 80 - Fire Pro Wrestling - Fire Pro Wrestling had to be one of the few consistently good wrestling games ever. The 2d nature of this game renders it timeless, and the big community behind this game really helps it evolve. This game is still one of the best wrestling games to play, as it supports a barrage of characters to play, including anyone from any promotion, be it WWE or NJPW. -
13.
Score 79 - EA Sports MMA - EA was doing some of its best work with the MMA series, and this score is the evidence for that. This game was in direct competition with the UFC title, and even though the game beat it in terms of score, it stood its ground very well. -
14.
Score 79 - WWE Day of Reckoning - When this game first came out, it was one of its kind. This was something different from WWE and was built exclusively for GameCube. The game utilizes the hardware to the best of its abilities and has similar gameplay to AKI's N64 titles. The game features a cool gameplay element titled "Momentum Shift" that shifts the whole game during desperate moments. -
15.
Score 78 - WWE '13 - Some people call this the better one. Some say it's the 2K14. Realistically, the WWE 2K14 has great gameplay, but WWE '13 has much more creative freedom. The game not only features a great set of tools and animations to build anyone, but it also has the support for custom entrance music, a feature people still ask for.
