“It’ll be done when it’s done.” Game publishers love to tease their audiences with reveals of in development titles, which is great….Until its been years since that tease happened and little to no information about the game has actually been revealed. Instead of telling us “it’ll be done when it’s done” why not wait until the game is actually ready to be shown instead of doing it years early and having a fanbase salivating for more?

“I don’t need to charge my controller.” There’s nothing worse than being in a heated gaming session and losing because your controller died mid-match and you couldn’t charge it in time to save yourself from you.

“You are the commander of an elite unit of warriors…” After years of playing shooters and historical fiction games, you can’t help but roll your eyes when the narrator of a trailer or a press conference tries to hype the main character of a game up as some almighty badass.

“Console is better than PC” More gatekeeping, seriously? Why hate on someone that enjoys their battle station setup? Sure, you only spent a few hundred dollars compared to a PC that may cost a few thousand, but who cares? If you’re happy, you’re happy.

“I’ll just download the update tomorrow…” Waiting to download a major content patch or expansion until the day of release is always a bad idea. No one wants to be sitting and waiting on launch day when you could be playing with your friends. Do the update the night before and save yourself the trouble.

“It’s only a couple of hundred dollars, I can afford it!” Absolutely terrible thing to say. Gaming is an expensive hobby, especially if you’re buying collectors editions. Once you start saying “i can afford it” you start spending money without paying attention, and before you know it, a few hundred dollars is missing from your account.

“One more match” One more match is never, ever just one more match. It’s five or ten more matches, depending on whether or not you’re on a losing streak. Sometimes you get frustrated and quit, but if you’re playing Call of Duty and dropping 50 kills a match, you’re not getting off, you’re playing till the sun comes up.

“I don’t mind microtransactions” Microtransactions aren’t bad in theory, but in practice, most publishers use them to exploit gamers and take every penny they possibly can from our wallets. Microtransactions aren’t our friends.

PC Gaming master race PC gamers...you do realize you can enjoy your games without rubbing how much your system cost in peoples faces, right? It’s entirely possible to just sit and enjoy things without trying to make someone else miserable.

“This is a photorealistic world.” Photorealism in games is typically code for “we spent all of our money on visual design so our gameplay and story are going to be horrible”. Most gamers would prefer a graphical downgrade so long as they got a better game.

“I can’t wait to pre-order this game!” Pre-ordering is almost never, ever a good idea because you’re paying for a promise that may not be fulfilled for months, if not years after release, if ever. Games like No Man’s Sky had their issues resolved, but games like Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens Colonial Marines will always be terrible.

“This is a procedurally generated world.” After No Man’s Sky, procedurally generated worlds are a hard sell for gamers because of what typically ends up being a genuine lack of variety.

“Single Player games are dead.” Gamers love single player experiences, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War and Spider-Man prove that. We just want unique, diverse gaming experiences instead of the same game we’ve been playing year after year.

“Eww, Why are you playing that?” Why’s it matter what people play so long as they’re having fun? We’re in a pandemic, people are stuck inside, let them find happiness wherever they can.

“You’re not a real gamer if you don’t play ( insert game title here)” Gatekeeping is lame, some gamers play everything, others only play Animal Crossing, and that’s okay. Just because you don’t spend hundreds of dollars on new games every year doesn’t mean you aren’t a real gamer.
