The game's retro visual style is heavily inspired by old-timey animations like Betty Boop, Felix the Cat, and early Disney cartoons, so turning it into an animated series actually makes a lot of sense. There are plenty of appearances by favorite characters/bosses by the look of it, including that godawful three-headed dragon we all struggled with in the game.
