I don't know how they knew he had a firearm or why he was searched. But I'm guessing someone in the crowd ratted on him because they suspect the crowd is littered with undercover officers. The fact that was the first question asked by the Capitol Police tells me they're well aware of the officers present. There's no way he was going to say "yes
