10 Possible Actors to Play Captain Shepard
The original Mass Effect trilogy is considered one of the greatest gaming experiences in history. The space adventures of Captain Shepard and his eclectic crew are so beloved, in fact, that a movie version has been in development hell since 2010.
Should it be produced, a talented thespian will be needed to fill Shepard's boots. Here are some picks:

Liam Hemsworth hasn't had quite the acting career of his big brother, Chris, although he does have the family looks (if not the muscles). He has been in a few notable works, including starring as Will Blakelee in The Last Song, as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games film series, and as Jake Morrison in Independence Day: Resurgence. He's also had roles in crime drama, Arkansas, rom-com, Isn't It Romantic, and alongside action star, Dwayne Johnson, in Empire State. The bottom line is that Hemsworth has done good work, but has remained in the shadow of his uber-famous big brother. Playing Commander Shepard in a Mass Effect movie, if successful, could finally bring the young actor out into the light. -

Everyone remembers Orlando Bloom best for his early roles as the arrow-slinging elf, Legolas, in The Lord of the Rings movies, and as Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. But Bloom has had a number of overlooked, action-oriented roles since, such as those in Troy and in Kingdom of Heaven. He's also displayed more dramatic acting chops in the Amazon Prime urban fantasy series, Carnival Row, and in the underrated Netflix show, Easy. However, it's his recent performance as tough-as-nails Captain Benjamin Keating in The Outpost that really solidifies his qualifications as a credible Captain Shepard. Beefed up and sporting a tight crew cut, Bloom looks the part and acts the part, carrying The Outpost on his broad shoulders to critical and audience acclaim. -

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, until quite recently, was thought by many to be the finest actor of Generation X. He started as a child, playing Tommy Sullivan in the alien sitcom, 3rd Rock from the Sun, for 5 years. His breakout cinematic performance was as a lead in the teen comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You, and from there, the roles just rolled in. Mysterious Skin, Brick, (500) Days of Summer, Premium Rush, Inception, Hesher, 50/50, The Brothers Bloom, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, The Lookout, Manic, Lincoln - JGL, as he's often called had a fantastic run. This allowed for starring roles in biopics, The Walk and Snowden, although audiences thinned.Gordon-Levitt has spent much of his time since then founding and running his online, fan-based production company, HitRecord, which has been a big hit, no pun intended. He's had a few roles in some streaming movies since, but it's time for JGL to take center stage again. He'd have to beef up a bit, like he did for his self-written role in Don Jon, but with a little muscle mass, he definitely has the talent to play Shepard. -

Dacre Montgomery doesn't have quite the lengthy resume that others on this list have. In fact, he only has one performance that has put him on the map for a role such as that of Shepard in a Mass Effect movie. And that is the role of Billy in Stranger Things. His work in that series, over only two seasons, has illustrated an impressive range on his part, from abusive, uncaring older brother, to cougar-hunting high school Romeo, to redeemed, heroic martyr who sacrifices himself to save Eleven from the Mind Flayer in season 3. Who saw that coming, huh? And that is why he deserves a shot at a role like this.If it makes you feel he's more qualified, he did star as the Red Ranger in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot. -

Does this man even need an introduction? He's Captain America. 'Nuff said. Other performances that have illustrated his chops as an action hero and a leader of men include Cellular, The Losers, Puncture, Push, Sunshine, and Snowpiercer. The latter film is a fantastic sci-fi post-apocalyptic movie in which Evans plays the leader of a revolutionary band of guerilla warriors, fighting their way from starvation at the end of a train, to survival and prominence at the front (You need to watch it to get it.) I don't think anyone could argue that Evans doesn't belong on this list. And now that he's done playing Cap, he's free to start a whole new adventure. -

Okay, I know what you're thinking. CW teen star gone old and ready for retirement. B*llshit! Jensen Ackles played the badass Dean Winchester for fifteen - count 'em - fifteen years. He looks good, he's fit, and he's perfected the role of battle-hardened warrior and hinderer of apocalyptic events to a fine cinder. CW actors haven't had a ton of luck making it on the big screen, but this is one fella who deserves a shot at a big cinematic role. Let's give it to him. -
7.
Steven Strait has been calling out to be a star since his (should-have-been) break out role in Sky High, as the villain-come-hero Warren Peace. He starred in a couple of underwhelming movies since then, both box office-wise and critically, but it wasn't until he won the role of Captain Jim Holden in the sci-fi TV hit, The Expanse, that his talent finally got the notice it deserves. As such, a role as Shepard in a big screen Mass Effect movie might pigeonhole him in Hollywood as a go-to space ship captain. Somehow, I don't think he'd complain. -
8.
Another young and somewhat inexperienced actor on this list, Justin Prentice isn't a name you hear a lot on the Internet. This may have something to do with his big role being that of a high school rapist in 13 Reasons Why. Even when it's fictional, it tends to follow you around these days. Point is, Justin Prentice played the role exceptionally well, and his pseudo-redemptive arc afterwards equally well. He was the king of the jocks in the series, and as such commanded respect from his high school comrades, in a charismatic and inspiring way. And he look like he could be 35. Let's give this guy a chance to rewrite his filmography, hmm? -
9.
Joel Kinnaman's American acting career has been skyrocketing ever since he took on the lead role of Detective Stephen Holder in AMC's The Killing. He then played pseudo-cyborg Takeshi Kovacs in the sci-fi action show, Altered Carbon, on Netflix. This cemented him as a tough guy with acting chops, and a believable action hero. Films of lesser quality, but notable dramatic action, followed with the 2014 RoboCop reboot, and 2016's Suicide Squad, which at least showed that he could deliver as a squad leader, something necessary for a role as Shepard. Kinnaman's action prowess continued to impress with his performance as Erik Heller, guardian and trainer of the deadly titular character, Hanna, in a small screen reboot of the movie. While Kinnaman's big screen efforts haven't matched the quality of his television appearances, through no fault of his own, it's time he got another shot at a cinematic leading role. The character of Shepard would be the perfect evolution of his on-screen leadership and action abilities. -
10.
Everyone knows this man. He's Ragnar Lothbrok, King of the History Channel's Vikings, father of a whole bunch of other historically famous Vikings, including Bjorn Ironside and Ivar the Boneless. His role in the epic, alongside his current role in Ridley Scott's HBO Max series, Raised by Wolves, has more than proved his worth as a seasoned thespian, learned in the craft of badassery and squad command. He said he would never do TV again, before Ridley Scott gave him a call. If he's ready to get back into cinema, a role as Shepard would certainly be a great starting point.
